Prague has been named the best city in Europe for a takeout lunch according to international takeout & delivery app Just Eat, which is not yet available in the Czech Republic. The Czech capital came in second worldwide in a new index shared by Just Eat featuring the best cities across the globe for a lunch to-go.
The index evaluated cities around the world on a variety of factors including the total number of restaurants with a lunchtime takeout menu and user reviews that factored in food quality, service, and overall ratings for more than four million restaurants worldwide.
In Europe, Prague came out as the best city for a takeout lunch with an overall score of 4.40. Factored into Prague's rankings were 8.26 takeout options per 100,000 people, an average food quality rating of 4.46 (out of 5.0) and service quality rating of 4.34 for an overall score of 4.40.
Lisbon came in second in the list with an overall score of 4.33, followed by Athens (4.30), Bucharest (4.28), and Warsaw (4.25). Sofia, Amsterdam, Berlin, Valletta (Malta), and Barcelona also rated above 4.20 to make it into Europe's top ten.
Among the top ten cities in Europe for a takeout lunch, only Amsterdam and Valletta boasted more takeout lunch options per capita than Prague. The Czech capital's food quality rating for takeout was the highest of any European city, and its service rating was second only to Athens.
Worldwide, Prague came in second-best for a takeout lunch behind only Hanoi in Vietnam, which topped the list. Given the wide range of Vietnamese restaurants in Prague, locals also have a chance to taste some of the flavors from the city rated best worldwide for a lunch to-go.
Phnom Penh in Cambodia came in third behind Prague, while Lisbon and Athens also cracked the top ten worldwide.
Prague's average food ratings among lunchtime takeout options even topped cities famed for their restaurant culture, including Paris (which scored 4.19 in the index) and Rome (4.22).
Prague has a long tradition of lunchtime cuisine, and many of the Czech capital's restaurants offer a special discounted menu over the lunch hours. While dining in has long been the standard, takeout options have become increasingly popular over the past two years following pandemic restrictions that saw restaurants closed to table service.
