Prague’s top 10 weekend events: Football fanfare, French food fixes, and film fests galore

From UEFA matches at outdoor bars to festivals of French cuisine and culture, the weekend of July 12-14 brings a flurry of activity to Prague.

FOOTBALL FRENZY

Spain and England will be going head to head in what’s set to be a nail-biting match on Sunday for the 2024 men’s UEFA European Football Championship. The highly anticipated final will be screened at open-air beer gardens and pubs around the city, with Sunset Cinema granting rooftop views and a huge projection. We’ve also got a list of the very best locations around town to gather with friends and get in the Euro spirit for one last time.

FRANCOPHILE FEVER

The oldest food festival in Prague is returning to Prague’s Na Kampě Square, bringing fine French delicacies and a fantastic atmosphere to the picturesque park. The French market will be held from July 11-14, serving up oysters, mussels, Burgundy snails, and wines from famous regions such as Alsace, Bordeaux, and Champagne.

If that’s not enough to satisfy your French obsession, Manifesto Market is celebrating Bastille Day early on July 12 with a program of Moulin Rouge style performances, an open fire barbecue, French pastries, live music, and more.

FILM FEST PICKS

Official screenings of films which premiered at the 58th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival began this week and will be running across the weekend at Prague cinemas Světozor, Aero and Přítomnost. Look forward to award-winning films such as Love Lies Bleeding, Glimpses of Hope, and The Girl with the Needle during the The Official Echoes of the Karlovy Vary IFF running until July 14.

The sequel to the hugely successful animated film Inside Out will be screening at Edison Filmhub on July 14 with English subtitles, bringing Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Disgust and Anxiety to the big screen for a salient story about the whirlwind of human emotion.

ART, STORIES AND STUNTS

Bring your children to DOX Contemporary Art Center for their Creative Summer program, with this Sunday’s session focusing on the KAFKAesque exhibition. The program will explore the concept of black humor, with the opportunity to experiment with your own artistic materials, drawing inspiration from the famous writer.

Enjoy the exciting collaboration of the Louvre Museum in Paris and the National Gallery Prague (NGP) in an English guided tour and peruse the best-known Mannerist works from the 16th century at the Waldstein Riding School in Malá Strana on July 14. From Michelangelo to Callot: The Art of Mannerist Printmaking features over 200 works, including graphics, drawings, paintings, and artistic crafts from major art centers of the Mannerist period, such as Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Bohemia, and France.

Head on down to Mariánské Square and Holešovice Market for the Behind the Door 2024 festival from July 10-16, bringing the streets alive with theater, circus and drama. Enjoy a puppet playground designed for children, watch Viktor Hlúpik, the juggler and ice cream master, see aerial stunts and acrobatics, and more.

SUMMER SWING AND SOARS

Wanting to try your hand (or legs) at swing dancing? Summer has ushered in beginner dance classes on the wooden outdoor patch of Café Šesťák, suitable for all levels. Twirl in the early evening sunlight with dance partners and enjoy a drink afterwards on July 12.

Make a visit to Točná Airport on July 13 to see an exhibition of planes on display for Hangar Open Day. Depending on the weather, some may even take to the skies. While admiring the vessels, you can pick up some novelty souvenir items for yourself any aerospace buffs you know.
