The Prague Integrated Transport System (PID – Pražská integrovaná doprava) includes trains, trams, metro, fernicular and boat transport options for both locals and visitors. The tram network is quite extensive and often overlaps with the metro system, making changing transport modes relatively easy and quick.
For those visiting Prague, the tram may provide more of an experience since much of the system traverses the old city and Prague’s numerous tourist attractions, and tram travel can provide some excellent (and inexpensive!) sightseeing. Tickets can be purchased at most newsagents or at the entrances to all metro stops. Alternatively, to purchase a ticket by SMS, a Czech number with premium SMS services activated must be used. Simply send a text to the number 902 06 with the message ‘DPT24’ (for a short-term ticket) or ‘DPT32’ (for a long-term ticket).
Various types of Prague trams
Single tickets must be stamped at yellow ticket validators within the trams. The fine for riding without a valid (stamped) ticket or transport pass is 950 CZK.
During summer months, the tram network is often rerouted due to construction. However, do not let that prevent you from travelling using this system.
