Whether you´re curious to try yoga or have been practicing it for some time, there´s an exciting new studio open in the center of Prague, near Kotva.

You´ll be warmly welcomed in a bright and friendly atmosphere and probably meet some familiar faces as well.

Dr. Aruna Singhvi, a long standing IWAP member, has been giving yoga classes in Prague since 1994. Recently she opened a new studio and is now offering a variety of classes for men and women of all ages and all levels, including those with special health or therapeutic needs. Classes range from absolute beginners to advanced and there are special classes for pre and post-natal women, for kids from 4 years to teenagers, and weekend intensive sessions for those who are interested in exploring the practice of yoga in depth. Private sessions are also offered by appointment.

Aruna grew up practicing yoga as a lifestyle and is well versed and knowledgeable, not just about the various yoga positions but about breathing, relaxation and how the body, especially the spine, functions. She also has a medical degree and has studied and taught in various parts of the world.  Her approach is warm, friendly and personal and she customizes the sessions to the individuals.

A typical yoga session lasts about two hours and begins with relaxation, lying comfortably on your back on a mat. Then the focus turns to breathing gently and deeply which is very therapeutic and helps train the mind to focus. After a short period Aruna then leads you through various yoga positions that emphasize stretching and using different muscle groups. Breathing is emphasized throughout as it helps to relax the muscles and promote stretch. Each individual is encouraged to pay attention to her body and stay within her range of ability and Aruna monitors everyone, making sure there is proper alignment and correct positioning. She is always happy to recommend specific exercises for individuals as well. Standing postures are then practiced and the session winds down with either breathing or relaxation. Music plays throughout and there are some relaxation sequences with specific instructions. It´s a very pleasant and refreshing way to spend a couple of hours on yourself.

The benefits are not just physical but mental and emotional as well. True yoga focuses on all aspects of the individual and is a harmony of mind, body and soul. Most people should be able to improve their concentration, combat the aging process and find themselves better able to cope with the challenges and difficulties in life.

The only equipment you will need is an exercise mat, a light blanket and loose comfortable clothing.  Most exercises are done barefoot but you may want to bring socks for the relaxation portion. Classes are offered Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. and throughout the day. The last class starts at 7:00 p.m. so bring your spouse! Please contact Aruna to discuss which class is most suitable. The studio is located at Soukenická 7 in Prague 1. The nearest metro stop is Náměstí republiky and trams number 5, 8 and 14 have stops close by (subject to change so please check). Parking may be found around Náměstí republiky or at Kotva or the Marriott. Treat yourself today!
