The Czech Republic will get a direct flight to Taiwan, says Prague Mayor

While most international flights between Prague and destinations outside of Europe are currently suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Prague-Taipei flight should be introduced soon after regular air travel has resumed.

“The direct air line between Prague and Taipei is on the right track,” Hřib wrote on Facebook.

“Once enough long-haul airplanes have been commissioned and the situation around COVID-19 has calmed down, it should be introduced. It makes me happy.”

The direct flight will be operated by the Taiwanese carrier China Airlines, which Hřib was quick to point out was not affiliated with mainland China.

“Representatives from China Airlines, a Taiwanese air carrier led by President Hsieh Shih-Chien, support [the direct flight]. The name China Airlines refers to the Taiwanese official name ‘Republic of China’, which has nothing to do with mainland China.”

China Airlines, which also flew the Czech delegation into Taipei on Monday, confirmed the development in less-certain terms following a meeting between Hsieh Su-chien and Czech Senate head Miloš Vystrčil.

“The feasibility of introducing a Taipei-Prague service in the future is currently being actively studied,” China Airlines released in a statement.

China Airlines and Czech Airlines are both members of SkyTeam Alliance, and cooperation between the two would offer connecting flights from Prague to additional locations in east Asia, and from Taipei to elsewhere in Europe.
