This new Olomouc hostel is among world’s 10 best, says The Guardian

But not to be outdone, another hostel in the Czech Republic has been given some high praise in an international publication.

Long Story Short in Olomouc has been included in a list of the “10 of the best new hostels in amazing buildings” from The Guardian’s Antonia Wilson.

While the criteria for making the list is unspecified, Long Story Short is indeed located in an amazing building: a horseshoe-shaped fortress called Locatelli’s Bastion that was built in the 1600s and became a military bakery in the 1800s.

“Part of a 17th-century horseshoe-shaped fortress – a podkov as it’s also known – this hostel blends the history of the building with contemporary design features,” Wilson writes for The Guardian story.

“Traces of stone emerge behind white plastered walls and, under arched ceilings, mezzanine-beds give a stylish twist to traditional bunks.”

The building remained a bakery until 1997, when the ovens were turned off and a lengthy renovation process began.

But rather than adopt the fortress to a new design, the new owners of Long Story Short instead chose to keep it as close to the original design as possible while turning it into a suitable facility for accommodation.

Shared hostel rooms at Long Story Short (with 4 or 6 beds) can be booked for as low as 250 crowns per night, but the venue also features private rooms at an increased (but still affordable) rates.

On the ground floor, Long Story Short also features a coworking space for digital nomads.

Having stayed at Long Story Short ourselves, we can highly recommend the venue as one of the most accommodating in the city.

If you’re in Olomouc during the summer, Long Story Short is also just around the corner from a popular beer garden and summer cinema.

And don’t forget to stop by Olomoucké tvarůžky museum, a short drive away in Loštice, where you can sample some famous smelly cheese in a variety of recipes including desserts.
