Prague's Powder Tower is currently undergoing renovation work, and may have been spared further damage following an unusual incident on Saturday evening. A tow truck transporting a Tesla Cybertruck struck scaffolding at the Prague landmark, causing significant disruption but thankfully no injuries.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on U Prašné brány Street under the tower, where the vehicle's hydraulic arm accidentally snagged the scaffolding erected for ongoing restoration work on the historic structure.

Authorities were quick to respond, deploying local police, accident investigation units, and firefighters from the Prague Fire Rescue Service to the scene. Eyewitness reports indicate that several sections of the scaffolding collapsed as a result of the impact, with debris falling onto the street below. Emergency crews worked swiftly to secure the area, ensuring that the site was safe and that any remaining loose debris was removed.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, focusing on the circumstances leading to the accident. Preliminary assessments indicate that the incident was accidental, stemming from the driver's failure to maneuver the truck correctly in the confined space near the historic landmark. Fortunately, the Powder Tower itself was reportedly unharmed.

Statement from Prague City Tourism

František Cipro, chairman of Prague City Tourism, noted that while the incident caused inconvenience, it will not significantly hinder the ongoing renovation efforts. The CZK 5 million project was originally expected to be completed by the end of October.

"Yesterday evening, a portion of the scaffolding at the Powder Tower was knocked down by a tow truck. The police were on the scene," Cipro noted in a press statement issued on Sunday morning.

"Restorers are assessing the condition of the tower this morning, and preliminary findings indicate that it was not damaged. We are currently evaluating the damage to the scaffolding and will seek compensation from the tow service; however, according to the workers, the extent of the damage does not affect the stability or use of the scaffolding."

Powder Tower renovations

The Powder Tower, one of Prague's most recognized Gothic monuments, has been undergoing extensive renovations as part of a larger revitalization project. The repairs, which involve cleaning, restoring, and replacing damaged elements of the tower's exterior, are essential for preserving the structure’s historical significance.

Visitors to the Powder Tower can still enjoy its historic presence, as the main gallery remains accessible and the renovations are designed to minimize disruptions to public access.

Constructed in 1475, the Powder Tower is a prominent symbol of Prague's Gothic architecture and serves as the gateway to the Royal Way leading to Prague Castle. As part of a broader renovation effort, the tower is currently undergoing significant repairs to its exterior and railings.
