There’s plenty happening this month – truly something for everyone! As the winter slowly draws to a close, the city comes alive with a slew of activities and events to keep us all entertained. We’ve got musical performances from a world-famous classical pianist, a contemporary electro producer, and a charming jazz vocalist all in one month!  Not to mention a beauty expo & vegetarian festival (not the same event!) So get ready to mark some dates in your diary, I have a good feeling that March’s events will bring something for everyone.

Music
Classical pianist Lang Lang will be putting on a very special performance in the Spanish Hall of the Prague Castle on March 31. It’s been six years since the Chinese pianist’s last performance in the city. The event (organized by the international music festival Dvořák in Prague) will include recitals from of Johan Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, and Frédéric Chopin. A truly exciting event from one of the world’s top pianists, ticket prices start at 4900 CZK and go up to 10,000 CZK. World class performances come at a high price!

The 14th sees four-time Grammy-winner Dianne Reeves perform as part of the Spring Gala for Strings of Autumn 2012. Dianne is one the greatest contemporary jazz singers, drawing comparisons to Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan. She’ll be joined by 2 excellent guitarists for this event: Russell Malone and Brazilian Lubamba Romero in this very rare show. An unmissable event for jazz lovers!

If you prefer you beats a little more upbeat, then perhaps the Czech-pop sounds of TOXIQUE will be more to you taste. The fun-loving five-piece electro/disco band have risen to fame thanks to their outgoing, upbeat songs and brightly-coloured clothing. TOXIQUE will be playing at Lucerna Music Bar on the 7th. The show starts at 20:00, with tickets 180 CZK.

For those looking for more underground sounds, I would recommend Rustie at Roxy on March 24. Rustie’s 2011 debut album ‘Glass Swords’ received critical acclaim for effortlessly combining genres and sounds to produce an unquestionably deep and progressive piece of work. As a DJ, Rustie imitates his production methods by mixing styles of dance music. This event is a definite for party people. Doors open at 21:00 and pre-sale tickets are 150 CZK (200 CZK on the door).

Culture
Interbeauty Prague kicks off on March 30 at the Holešovice Exhibition Grounds. The Interbeauty Festival Prague has become the most important professional cosmetics fair in the Czech Republic, with a growing number of visitors year-by-year. The main exhibition categories will be cosmetics, manicure and pedicure, hair care, salon furniture and equipment, SPA centers, and skin and body care instruments. The fair will also focus on the latest trends in the cosmetics field, including anti-aging, dermatocosmetics & shaping of the body, and general healthy lifestyle tips and advice for all in attendance. Doors open at 10:00 and entrance is set at 120 CZK (80 CZK concessions). Beautiful!

Food & Drink
Do you still observe lent? I know a few people who have given up meat for the abstinent season. They would certainly benefit from visiting one of the seven restaurants involved in the Vegetfest. Simply select your restaurant from the website, reserve your table, and then enjoy the delicious food on the date you’ve selected! 290 CZK for a 3-course menu. Visit their website to mull over the options.

Film
Starting on Tuesday, March 6th in Prague, the 14thOne World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festivalis to feature 106 documentary films from 44 countries. In addition to its traditional countries such as Afghanistan, Belarus, Burma or China, One World 2012 is going to take its visitors to rather unusual places as well – for instance, Salvador, Syria, Yemen, Greenland or the Maldives currently facing political upheaval and the rising sea level.

FEBIOFESTwas founded in 1993 by FEBIO, the independent film and TV company. They have provided opportunities to a great number of important Czech filmmakers, including Vera Chytilova, Juraj Jakubisko, Jiří Menzel, Jan Jireš and Jan Hřebejk. FEBIOFEST has gone on from humble beginnings to become one of the largest film festivals in the Czech Republic while still retaining its audience-friendly atmosphere. Check out the FEBIOFEST website and see what they have on offer this year.

The festival starts on Thursday, March 22, and runs until Friday,  March 30. Situated in the modern CineStar Anděl 12-screen multiplex, FEBIOFEST guarantees excellent screening conditions and supreme comfort for festival-goers. The festival also uses two other unique venues: PONREPO Cinema (118 seats) for Czech Archive prints, and a special Video Auditorium (approx. 100 seats), the location of which varies from year to year, to bring selected films to a public spaces for free.

FEATURED EMPLOYERS

Business & Education
The International Trade Fair of Student Companies takes place from March 24 until Monday, March 26. It’s an event which is open to the general public, secondary school teachers, and students. Attendees are invited to make use of the many seminars and activities based around student businesses – a fantastic day of activities and interaction. Attendees get the opportunity to meet and speak with students who have launched their own companies. More information on this event can be found here.

Health & Sports
Hervis Prague Half Marathon kicks off on Saturday, March 31st. Unfortunately applications to take part in the Half Marathon have now closed, but I would definitely recommended heading down to a few of the locations that can be found on the marathon’s official website. Regardless of whether you know some of the 9,000 runners or not, being a spectator can be an exhilarating experience. The organisers have planned a beautiful route through the historical streets of Prague, along the Vltava River, and across five bridges. So head down to one of the fastest courses in the world to support all of the runners and be sure to wrap up warm!

Obviously, this is just a quick round up of the events happening in March. Feel free to add any of your own forthcoming events to our ever-growing What’s On section. Your additions always make a real difference!
