With festive Christmas markets filled with the aroma of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine, snow-covered tiled rooftops, and historic landmarks that draw increasingly large crowds year-round, Prague is one of Europe’s most popular cities to visit during Christmas.

The Czech capital is so popular, in fact, that it was recently deemed the 6th-most visited city in the world during Christmastime based on research by Kayak and Business Insider.

But while Prague’s Christmas markets and all-around festive atmosphere will delight an estimated 600,000 tourists this holiday season, if you or your guests want to get away from the crowds we’ve prepared a quick list of some alternative options to have some Christmas fun in Prague this holiday season:

Take a *Free* Tour of Christmassy Prague

Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock delight waves of tourists all-year round, but during Christmas the city’s historic landmarks are especially merry – and crowded – sights to see.

Instead of braving the crowds yourself, did you know that you can take a free tour of Prague’s city center?

Good Tours Prague, which also operate free city tours in Krakow and Vienna, organize free tours of some of the most popular landmarks in Prague, including Prague Castle, the Astronomical Clock, Wenceslas Square and – an especially popular Christmas sight – the Infant Jesus of Prague.

Tours lasting 3 hours can be booked in groups (of up to 8), or you can tag along on an existing tour and meet some fellow travellers. Tour guides are Prague locals with expertise in the city and culture, and best of all, the tours can be taken for free.

Tour guides with Good Tours operate solely on tips, so after taking a tour of Prague’s city center you can decide how much it was worth.

Ride a Beer Bike through Prague’s Christmas Markets

Too cold to take a walking tour of Prague’s city center? Warm up with some great Czech beer while you push the pedal to power a bicycle built for 10 with Beer Bike Prague, one of the Czech capital’s newest and most trendy tourist attractions.

Beer bikes are an undeniably popular new tourist attraction in the city center: earlier this year, Beer Bike Prague even reached the #1 rated position at TripAdvisor among Things to Do in Prague.

And despite the chilly weather, beer bikes are an increasingly attractive destination during the Christmas season, with festive tours taking place on Mikuláš Eve, when angels and demons roamed the city, and along the streets surrounding Prague’s festive city center Christmas Markets during the festive season.

Each tour with Beer Bike Prague lasts 1.5 hours, includes a 30-liter keg of famed Pilsner Urquell beer, and has room for up to 15 passengers (10 can pedal). Not a fan of beer? You can exchange the keg for prosecco and/or wine and soft drinks.

Visit the Chilly-Cool RANGER Prague Shooting Range

If you want real break from the festive atmosphere of Prague’s city center during Christmas, RANGER Prague Shooting provides a large open-air shooting arena about 30 minutes outside of the city center where visitors get the chance to try out a range of legendary weapons.

The impressive lineup of guns offered at RANGER Prague Shooting includes an AK-47 assault rifle, Glock and Magnum handguns, Dragunov sniper rifle, UZI submachine gun, pump-action shotgun, Winchester rifle, and much more.

Both experienced shooters and absolute newcomers without a gun license are welcome, with training and supervision provided by professional instructors with backgrounds in the Czech military and police. Four different arenas offer guests the opportunity to shoot at targets from a distance of 25 to 500 meters.

While a popular activity during spring and summer, winter months at the RANGER Prague Shooting provide an entirely different environment that can truly put your shooting skills to the test.
