In 2014, the Cimrman English Theatre company, a group devoted to performing the works of beloved Czech fictional character Jára Cimrman, made its Prague debut with “The Stand-In”.

Follow-up performances of “The Conquest of the North Pole” (2016) and “The Pub in the Glade (2017)” debuted to sell-out audiences.

Now a new Cimrman show will have its Prague premiere on March 29 at Žižkov’s Divadlo Járy Cimrmana with the troupe putting on The Act (Akt).

The play is the first to be penned solely by Cimrman co-founder and acclaimed Czech author, actor, and screenwriter Zdeněk Svěrák whose 1996 film Kolya won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.

A dark, humorous look at human relationships that includes poetry and songs, the plot revolves around an artist, Žíla, and his devoted wife, Žílová, as they anxiously prepare for the arrival of three guests: a teacher, an ex-convict, and a sexologist.

The English translation is by Brian and Dagmar Caspe who worked with Hanka Jelínková, Svěrák’s daughter. The cast is comprised of original Cimrman English Theatre players Peter Hosking, Curt Matthew, Adam Stewart, Ben Bradshaw, Brian Caspe, and Michael Pitthan.

While the March premiere is already sold out, additional performances are slated for April and June. The company will continue to run it’s entire repertoire from March to June for those who haven’t yet caught a performance.

Since its debut, the Cimrman English Theatre project has seen significant success, appearing throughout the Czech Republic and even touring briefly in the US. The project has been given the blessing of Mr. Svěrák, himself, who is occasionally spotted at performances, as well as the family of late co-creator Ladislav Smoljak.

Svěrák and Smoljak introduced their now iconic character, an inventor, philosopher, world traveler, all-around genius, and so-called greatest Czech in 1966 via the radio play Nealkoholická vinárna U Pavouka (The Non-Alcoholic Wine Bar at the Spider) on December 23, 1966.
