Prague Playhouse Presents

Criminal Hearts
By JANE MARTIN

In an upscale Chicago condominium — empty except for a bed — Ata Windust lives on pizza and Dr. Pepper, mourning the remains of her marriage, with no one but an electric pencil sharpener to keep her company.

No one, that is, except Bo, the con woman who crawls through her window in hopes of stealing everything she has.  She doesn´t realize that Ata´s ex-husband has already beaten her to the task.  Nor does she realize that she will leave this apartment with something of greater value than she could ever hope to steal.

This November the Prague Playhouse promises a rare combination of cynicism and optimism – not to mention humor – in an entertaining evening of English-language theatre for all audiences.  Criminal Hearts is a tale of trust and pragmatism, the story of an unlikely friendship between two very different women from very different worlds, told through a play which the New York Times described as “a woman-dominated statement that provokes, entertains, and proves self-sustaining.”

First produced in 1992 by the Theatre Company of Detroit, the play bears the distinction of having been written by someone who quite possibly doesn´t exist. Jane Martin, author of 10 plays and numerous sketches for the renowned Actor´s Theatre of Louisville, has created the biggest mystery in modern theatre by eschewing photos, interviews, and awards ceremonies, refusing to allow even a brush with the Pulitzer Prize to budge her out of anonymity.  If nothing else, as the savvy Bo remarks, “If you don’t exist, you’re gonna save a lot on toilet paper.”

The Prague Playhouse production is directed by veteran actress AMY HUCK and stars MICHELLE HANKS, a regular of the Denver stage who appeared last year in the Prague Playhouse´s Talking With…(also by Jane Martin), and JUWANA JENKINS, whom audiences will recognize from her appearances as a favorite performer in Prague´s top jazz and blues clubs.  Prague Playhouse ensemble members JIM HIGH and MICK SWINEY round out the cast, with additional production support by Prague Playhouse Artistic Director BRIAN CASPE.
