Czech Republic coronavirus updates, July 9: 129 new cases Wednesday, largely at three outbreak clusters

There were 129 new COVID-19 cases reported in the Czech Republic on Wednesday, according to the latest updates from the Czech Health Ministry this morning.

The majority of new COVID-19 cases in the Czech Republic are now at three localized outbreaks: in Karviná and its surroundings, the site of the largest Czech outbreak at the OKD mines, as well as in the village of Církvice in the Kutná Hora district in central Bohemia and in Větrný Jeníkov in the Jihlava district of south Moravia.

In Karviná, there have been about 168 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over the past week; the rise in new cases has remained steady following the end of the OKD blanket testing earlier last week. Cases continue to steadily rise in neighboring Ostrava (25 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over the past week) and Frýdek-Místek (30 cases per 100,000 residents).

In the Kutná Hora district, about 45 minutes east of Prague, there have been 34 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last week; a majority of the new cases have been traced to employees of the company HR Partner CZE in Církvice.

In Jihlava, 14 people have recently tested positive for COVID-19 in the town of Větrný Jeníkov, which has re-introduced restrictive measures to halt the spread.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis in mid-March, there have now been a total of 12,814 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Czech Republic.

The country has reported 8,010 recoveries and 351 COVID-19-related deaths in that span, leaving a total of 4,453 active cases as of this morning. Of the active cases, 137 are being treated in hospitals, while 12 are considered to be in serious condition.
