A free hotline for women who have experienced violence is now available in the Czech Republic and throughout the European Union. The number, 116 016, is operated by the Czech crisis organization Rosa.

“The line is free, and women can call anonymously,” said Branislava Marvánová Vargová, head of Rosa. “Many women feel ashamed to talk about the violence they face, especially those with high social status or whose partners are public figures.”

The hotline is open 24/7 and provides support in Czech, English, and Ukrainian. Marvánová Vargová noted that violence against women is a widespread issue across Europe. Research shows that one in three women has experienced some form of partner violence during her lifetime.

“This problem is universal across the EU and needs specialized help,” she added.

Rosa also operates another free hotline, 800 60 50 80, through its crisis center. Since opening in June 2022, the center has responded to over 8,800 calls, chats, and emails from victims seeking support.

Hotline numbers starting with 116 are reserved for EU-wide services for people in difficult situations. In 2021, the Council of Europe called on member states to establish a unified hotline for women experiencing violence.

Women in need of help can access immediate and confidential support through this service at any time.
