This weekend ushers in the apple season in the Czech Republic. Here in Prague, bold flavors and autumnal festivities are set to accompany the harvest with several events set taking place this weekend and next that offer a glimpse into the world of Czech apples and cider-making.

This weekend (Sept. 16-17), cider enthusiasts can visit the Cider Celebration Festival at the Radlická kulturní sportovna near Anděl metro station.

With over 100 varieties of cider to sample, the event promises to elevate the perception of cider beyond basic offerings. Craft ciders and lemonades from small local manufacturers across Czechia and abroad will be showcased, allowing guests to savor the local craftsmanship behind each beverage.

  • Czech apples are typically harvested in mid-September.
  • Czech apple varieties include Šampion, Rubin, and Bohemia.
  • Find a list of cider bars and orchards to visit here.
  • The word for apple-picking festival in Czech is jablkobraní.

In addition to trying tantalizing ciders, attendees can indulge in delectable food and enjoy a lively program suitable for the entire family. The festival aims to support and promote domestic cider producers who often go unnoticed beyond their own regions, offering them a platform to showcase their craft to a wider audience.

Simultaneously, on Saturday, Sept. 16, the Ctěnice castle complex, part of the Museum of the Capital City of Prague is hosting an apple-picking event, where guests can experience traditional apple harvest festivities against the backdrop of centuries-old trees.

Visitors can hand-pick apples straight from the orchard located near the Riding Hall. Apple picking runs from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Ongoing events include an apple strudel contest, food carving, and art workshops, a theater performance for kids, and an apple game. Entry is free.

Fear not if you miss this weekend's apple festivities: The Na Ovoce initiative will host multiple apple-picking days throughout September, beginning with a self-picking day on Sept. 20, in the Na Krutci orchard in Prague 6. The event will run through Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

A Fruit Festival will be held on Sunday, Sept. 24 at the Na Klíčov orchard in Vysočany, to close the season. The festival will include workshops, lectures, guided walks, and activities for children. Attendees can participate in cider pressing and jam making, and enjoy music and food in the friendly atmosphere among the old trees.
