Florenc metro station is poised to get a new, large light-based installation named “Synapse” by visual artist Jan Poš that will reflect the importance of Prague’s public transport. It is set to be a permanent addition to the station and will be unveiled in 2026.

The heartbeat of Prague

According to a press release from the Prague Public Transport Company (DPP), the new artwork – displayed as a type of electronic board composed of 170 panels within the metro station’s hall – will be a visual metaphor that presents Prague’s public transport as the city’s central nervous system.

Electrical discharges will cause animated lines to run through the artwork, symbolizing the interwoven nature of metro lines, trams, and bus routes in Prague – akin to the neurons of a living organism.

DPP says that it chose Florenc to host this artwork as it is one of the most important stations in Prague’s public transport network – a point of interchange and connection for thousands of people every day. DPP referred to it as the “crossroads” of the capital.

The Light for Metro competition held by DPP saw over 20 people submit various proposals for different types of light-based artwork that would feature at Florenc. Poš’ was chosen as it was the best representation of Prague public transport’s interconnected nature.

Bridging old and new

This integration of contemporary art into public spaces aligns with the vision of DPP and the City of Prague, enhancing the commuter experience while revitalizing old sites like metro stations. DPP also noted the challenges of selecting a suitable piece of art that would fit in well with the station’s current Battle of Sokolov mosaic that displays a World War II fight.

FEATURED EMPLOYERS

"By combining interactive elements, digital technologies, and the use of classic neon lights, the artist connects the past and the present"

Deputy Mayor of Prague for Culture Jiří Pospíšil

“The format and style of the artwork creates a bridge between the history and the present of the metropolitan area,” said the artist. Deputy Mayor of Prague for Culture Jiří Pospíšil also praised Poš's innovative approach; blending interactive elements and digital technologies with classic neon lights, “effectively bridging the historical context of subway architecture with contemporary artistry.”

Deputy Mayor of Prague for Transport Zdeněk Hřib commended the choice of artwork, noting that the light-based display will illuminate the darkness of the metro station. “Florenc will now receive a dynamic work of art that will not only attract the curiosity of all passers-by, but will also bring the energy of light to the lobby,” he commented.

Redeveloping Florenc station

The creation of Synapse comes as part of broader efforts to redevelop Florenc station, with infrastructure upgrades targeting energy-efficient enhancements that include LED lighting, new switchboards, wall refurbishments, and modernizing technical facilities.

Synapse is part of the broader "Art for the City” program that looks to add more pieces of art to Prague’s public spaces. Mirrored artwork by the mouth of the Žižkov Tunnel is an example, as is the “Girl with a Bicycle" art installation in Prague 8.
