The first ever Dožínky na Letné 2017 (Harvest Festival on Letná) kicks off September 8 and, according to organizers, it is shaping up to be one of the largest farmers markets the city has ever seen.

The program, released yesterday by the Ministry of Agriculture, lists an impressive line up of nearly 100 regional sellers from all over the Czech Republic for its late-summer market.

Vendors include Moravské dobroty, Farma rodiny Němcovy, and Takový makový, a company specializing in poppy-seed drinks.

An accompanying roster of events will take place at the National Museum of Agriculture and the National Technical Museum.

Performances of folklore ensembles from the Czech Republic, museum tours, cooking shows, theater performances, and a fishing exhibit will celebrate the harvest season.

Dożynki is a Slavic harvest festival. In pre-Christian times the feast usually fell on the autumn equinox, in modern times it is typically celebrated on one of the Sundays following the end of the harvest.

To add to the festive atmosphere, The Tap Tap, Ewa Farna, and additional Czech bands will be on hand for open-air performances; a parade will also take place on the second day of the festival.

The event aims to present Czech agriculture, folklore, traditions, history, and the “everyday activities and fruits of our farmers’ labor.”

The regional market and festival will be held from September 8-9.
