Percentage of new Czech COVID-19 cases on Thursday lowest in May

Prague, May 22 (CTK) – The share of COVID-19 cases versus the daily number of tested samples dropped to 0.46 percent in the Czech Republic on Thursday, the lowest since the beginning of May, and the number of new cases, 33, was this week’s lowest, according to the latest data released by the Czech Health Ministry.

The total number of cases registered since the epidemic’s early March outbreak in the country reached 8,754 on Thursday.

The number of recoveries rose by three to 5,932 and the number of COVID-19 patients’ deaths stagnated at 306.

Wednesday saw about 40 recoveries and three deaths, according to updated information.

The daily increases in the number of new cases have fluctuated considerably this week. There were 111 of them on Monday, the highest daily increase since April 21, which epidemiologists ascribed to the current infection epicentre among the Darkov coal mine staff in north Moravia.

On Tuesday, the increase slowed down to 61 new cases, but rose again to 74 on Wednesday, when the proportion of the new cases to the total of tested samples also rose, to 0.98 percent from Tuesday’s 0.73.

On Thursday, with 33 new cases, the proportion fell by more than a half, to the level it saw last on May 2. The number of tested samples slightly dropped on Thursday as against Wednesday, to 7,149.

The number of those currently ill with COVID-19 has been steadily mildly rising since Monday. It was decreasing from mid-April to May 17, falling from 4,800 to 2,372, but started rising again this week and stood at 2,519 this morning.

A total of 150 patients stay in hospital, including some 30 in serious condition.

Three new cases of infection were confirmed by 09:00 today, raising the total number to 8,757. No new recoveries or deaths have been reported today for now.

Out of the 14 regions, the highest number of COVID-19 cases, 2,015, has appeared in Prague, and the capital also has the biggest share of patients in overall population. There are 155 patients per 100,000 inhabitants. South Bohemia fares the best in this respect, with 28 per 100,000.
