A huge number of attractions, relatively low prices, and high levels of public safety put Prague near the top of a new ranking for solo travel cities.

Prague has been ranked as the second-best destination in the world for solo travelers, according to a new study by travel operator Planet Cruise.

To calculate the best spots for solo travelers, the study based its methodology on six aspects: safety rates, the average cost of a hotel per night, the number of available group activities, the amount of attractions, the price of one-way public transport ticket, and the general friendliness of the city.

Strong on safety, friendliness, and transport

Taking all these variables into account, Prague received the second-highest score of 4.6 out of 5, with only the Japanese capital of Tokyo ranked higher. Prague performed especially well in its safety category; indeed, on data aggregator Numbeo, Prague boasts a safety index of 75.39 – among the highest out of all cities in Europe. Earlier this year in a separate study, the Czech capital was ranked Europe's safest city for travelers.

The world's top solo-travel destinations

  • 1.Tokyo (Japan)
  • 2.Prague (Czechia)
  • 3.Beijing (China)
  • 4.Hanoi (Vietnam)
  • 5.Shanghai (China)
  • 6.Chiang Mai (Thailand)
  • 7.Budapest (Hungary)
  • 8.Vienna (Austria)
  • 9.Rome (Italy)
  • 10.Bucharest (Romania)

It also scores a strong score on its friendliness index, at 62 out of 100. Notably, only Vienna received a higher ranking in this category. Although it performed average in the hotel-cost category (with an average price of USD 113 per night), it had an above-average number of attractions compared to other cities, at around 4,000. It performed average in terms of the number of group tours available, which totaled 1,000.

In terms of public-transport costs, Prague fared better than the likes of Tokyo, Vienna, Florence, and Paris, but came out more expensive than other Asian countries on the list, such as Hanoi in Vietnam and Mumbai in India. As well as its relatively low price, major bonuses of Prague’s public transport system are its interconnectivity and efficiency – earlier this year TimeOut magazine ranked the city’s public transit system as the second best in the world.

A popular city in other rankings

Prague has received many accolades for being an attractive city to travelers. In 2021, the city was ranked among the world's top cities for solo female travelers. That same year, TimeOut ranked the Czech capital as the seventh-best city in the world. For those unable to travel solo due to having children, the city is also attractive – in 2022 it was named the most kid-friendly vacation city in Europe.

One downfall of Prague could be communication in the city – one study from last year found that it was one of the "most challenging" countries in Europe to navigate linguistically. However, its strong levels of safety, comparatively low prices, and an abundance of attractions underscore – as evidenced by the Planet Cruise study – its status as a highly desirable destination for solo travelers.
