Local message boards and blogs have been buzzing lately with the possibility that Irish retailer Primark could at long last be opening a Prague branch.

Rumors began circulating this past February that the company had plans to open a store in the Chodov shopping center, currently undergoing a large-scale expansion, as early as this spring.

At the time, Czech daily Deník reached out to Marcela Hrdličková, director of Unibail-Rodamco, the commercial real estate developers who own and manage Chodov Centrum.

Ms. Hrdličková, commenting on behalf of Unibail-Rodamco, responded that: “These facts [we] cannot confirm.”

Her response was not quite proof enough for Czech media who made additional inquiries at Primark corporate, receiving a similar response from Eilish Joyce, of FleishmanHillard, the PR agency which represents the company:

“Primark’s development program is currently focused on other areas, as a consquence, therefore, the company currently has no plans to expand into the Czech Republic.”

Following a new wave of rumors making the social media rounds this weekend, we sent an e-mail to Maria Doyle, corporate PR manager at Primark.

Ms. Doyle indicated that ours was not the first such query she had received and that the company has spent much time “dampening” Prague-in-Primark talk, writing:

“As Primark operates under a public company we do not comment on speculation around store openings.”

She referred us once again to the folks at FleishmanHillard who issued this definitive statment, sure to disappoint those among us hoping to add a fresh batch of novelty tees and sparkly trainers to our spring wardrobe:

“Primark currently has no plans to open stores in the Czech Republic.”

At least one person, and probably legions of Czech design fans, will be happy to learn that the fast-fashion giant won’t be conquering Czechia any time soon.

Ondra Tyleček operates the Primarklovers bus tour to Dresden (for those who question the cult of Primark in the Czech Republic, our coverage of his newly launched tour was among our most popular articles in 2016).

He is familiar with the ongoing rumors and says that he believes they got started in 2014 when Primark announced that they were building a warehouse near Bor u Tachova.

“Many people thought either there would be a Primark store in Bor u Tachova or there would be a Primark store in Prague,” he told us via e-mail.
