Following a sunny and dry spell in Czechia, much of the country will be met with rain every day this week, with rainfall in the capital expected Tuesday through to Sunday according to the forecast of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ).

Although temperatures will remain warm – reaching around 24 degrees Celsius on Thursday – a bout of low air pressure traveling from the south of Europe will cause Prague, Brno, and Karlovy Vary to experience rain from Monday onward.

A wet Prague

In the capital, today will be mostly wet in the afternoon and temperatures will reach a maximum of around 20 degrees Celsius.

Tuesday will be the coolest and rainiest day of the week, with daytime temperatures not surpassing 18 degrees and the morning forecast to be just 13 degrees Celsius. The chance of rain will be close to 100 percent.

Wednesday will be warmer in Prague, with temperatures reaching about 23 degrees Celsius, and will see slightly less rain.

Notably, Thursday will also be rainy, and those who are superstitious may see this as a warning of 40 consecutive days of rain. In Czechia, St. Medard’s Day – named after a French bishop said to have been sheltered from the rain as a child by a protective eagle – is on June 8. Czech folklore sayings hold that if it rains on this day, the next 40 will be full of rain, too.

The second half of the week will be similar to Wednesday's weather, with the warmest day of the working week set to be on Thursday. The weekend will see warm temperatures, reaching daytime highs of about 24 degrees Celsius, but the rain will also continue. A small thundershower is forecast in the capital at about Sunday midday.

Regional outlook

As for other regions in Czechia, Brno will experience largely the same weather as Prague this week – the only difference being that Monday will see substantially more rain. Temperatures will also be 1 to 2 degrees Celsius cooler on average in Czechia’s second-largest city.

Weather trends in Ústí nad Labem and Olomouc will largely reflect Brno, but Ústí will see slightly warmer temperatures mid-week. Hradec Králové, although marginally drier than the aforementioned cities, is forecast to be hit by thundershowers three days in a row – from Friday through to Sunday.

Pilsen, České Budějovice, and Karlovy Vary will also experience daily rainfall, although Wednesday morning is forecast to be dry in these regions.

The forest fire warning that had been in effect last week remains in effect due to still-warm temperatures. According to the ČHMÚ, the west of the country – including Prague and Bohemian Switzerland – is currently on a low-level alert for forest fires, with the risk of blazes reported as being “moderate.” This warning is in effect indefinitely.
