Prague, August 20th, 2009

For the fourteenth year running, PIM, the organisers of the famous marathon in Prague, will be hosting its TESCO Prague Grand Prix that will take place in and around the streets of the city´s Old Town during the evening of Saturday, September 12th, 2009.

Alongside the traditional “adidas Women´s Race 5 km” (a 5 km race for women only, sponsored by adidas) and the IAAF recognised silver label  “METRO Men’s Race 10 km” (a 10 km race for men, sponsored by METRO), the evening will also see the second running of the “TESCO Run for Life 3,8 km” which will start from the Old Town Square and which is the final race in a series of runs that have been taking place throughout the whole country during the summer.

The “TESCO Run for Life” is a non-competitive charitable project that is based on TESCO´s very successful “Run for Life” racing series in the UK.  The Czech “Run for Life” has been developed by PIM and TESCO together, in cooperation with Krtek, the Children‘s Oncology Foundation, the TESCO shopping centres and “Česká Onkologická společnost” (the Czech Oncology association), and the Prague race is the last in a series that have already taken place in Plsen, Brno, Ostrava and Pardubice.

Talking about the “TESCO Run for Life” series, Carlo Capalbo, the President of PIM said:

“This is the second year that the “TESCO Run for Life” series has been held and we are delighted to have been involved in the creation of such a wonderful event, somethingm that we hope will be part of the PIM running circuit for years to come. Long distance running is different from most other sports in that it allows people to take part and compete, whatever their age and background.  The fact that such races, and in particular the “TESCO Run for Life” series, are also able to raise money for such worthy causes, whilst giving everyone that takes part such huge enjoyment, makes all of our work throughout the year so worthwhile.

Running for charity, a very ordinary event abroad, is still very underdeveloped in the Czech Republic, but now we are starting to see signs of great public interest since it brings together not only professional athletes but also those enthusiasts who want to support a good cause, and, therefore, add a completely different and deeper dimension to the race.”

The “TESCO Run for Life”  series has raised more than 800,000 CZK so far this year and has attracted a number of famous celebrities, each of whom have acted as Patron of one of the races.  Those that have already acted as Patrons during 2009 include Jiri Langmajer, Tomas Matonoha, Monika Zidkova and Roman Zach, and amongst those taking part in the September 12th race will be the “face of the Prague race”, the popular actress and presenter Tereza Kostková.

The “TESCO Run for Life 3,8 km” will start at 18:30 and everyone, from whatever age group and ability, is welcome to take part. All admission fees will go to the charity.

Those who do not want to take part in the race can sponsor one of the runners, whether a friend or family member, and thus make their own contribution to such a good cause. Runners have the opportunity to create their own profile on the website of the project (www.behprozivot.cz), give information about their run, and explain why they decided to get involved.

The whole TESCO Prague Grand Prix will be accompanied by the Marathon Music Festival, with bands playing alongside the race track and entertaining both those watching and those taking part.
