This weekend in Prague: New Year's Eve parties and more

You can celebrate at a wide array of clubs and restaurants or seek refuge in the darkened halls of a local cinema.

See Puccini's classic opera La bohème, which gave us the idea of "bohemian," in the sense of free-spirited, and also inspired the musical "Rent." The last performance of the year is on Dec. 30 at the State Opera.

A special New Year's Eve performance of Ball im Savoy takes place at the State Opera on Dec. 31, starting at 6 p.m. The operetta tells a story full of funny conspiracies, romantic tension, and unexpected plot twists involving a newlywed couple being tested for their fidelity. Along the way, you will hear jazz, Hungarian czardas, tango, klezmer, and Viennese waltzes.

A special holiday show called Star of Bethlehem is at Planetarium Praha in Stromovka, until Jan. 2. Headphones for English narration are available.

Bar and Books Prague on Mánesova Street in Vinohrady has a New Year's Eve burlesque show on Dec. 31. Admission includes a welcome drink and a cheese and charcuterie platter.

Royal Theatre and Club Chic lets you dance to electro-swing and then see a late burlesque show on Dec. 31. Finger foods from a caterer will be available.

One of the few places to hear live music on Dec. 30 is Bar and Books Prague on Mánesova Street in Vinohrady. The duo of Anna Manzina and Robin Finesilver, a.k.a. Lady & The Devil, will perform classic blues and jazz lounge music.

On Dec. 30, BNC Express - The Nightmare Before NYE highlights the annual compilation published by the independent drum and bass label born in Italy. BNC will celebrate its 2022 outputs with a showcase at Storm Club featuring Czech artists involved in the project.

The cover band ABBA CZ will perform the Swedish group's biggest hits on Dec. 31 at Divadlo Hybernia.

DupleX overlooks Wenceslas Square and is staging a rooftop party with top DJs and dancers on Dec. 31. There is a dress code, so don't look shabby.

Hard Rock Cafe has an a la carte menu plus singer and guitarist Jamie Marshall at 8 p.m. A DJ takes over after that. The photo corner is open until midnight.

Hear Romani group Terne Čhave at Jazz Dock on Dec. 31. They play their own style of music that is sometimes called "rom 'n' roll."

The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra has a concert on the afternoon of Dec. 31 at Smetana Hall in Obecní dům with Friedemann Riehle conducting and soprano Anda-Louise Bogza as the featured soloist.

The Christmas market at Old Town Square will have music on its stage from 7 p.m. to midnight on Dec. 31.

See local displays of fireworks over the city from the roof of Radost in Žižkov on Dec. 31 from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Admission includes a glass of sparkling wine.

Dance at Rock Café to music from Hello Marcel and more on Dec 31.

Roxy has a night of DJs on two stages and dancing on Dec. 31. The theme of the party is Avatar, with blue decor.

Ring in the new year at SaZaZu's Masquerade party on Dec. 31, with music from notable DJs and more.

U Malého Glena has a party on Dec. 31 featuring rock, pop and R'n'B from Spyder & Ban Elegance.

New Year's Eve Dining

Agave Restaurant, a short walk from Old Town Square, offers a choice of menus. Main course options include guinea fowl or pluma Ibérico steak on the CZK 1,799 menu and duck or rib-eye steak on the CZK 1,999 menu. Wine pairings are extra.

Andaz Prague in the former Sugar Palace lets you choose from drinks-only in the Mez bar to a pass-around dinner in the Zem restaurant and drinks on Dec. 31.

The Augustine lets you celebrate in a former monastery on Dec. 31. There's a cocktail reception and gala five-course dinner with a live band, and a midnight party in the Brewery. Read more in our story.

Monkey Bar in the Falkensteiner Boutique Hotel plans a Velvet Party in the Jungle with a monkey bites menu and a midnight buffet on Dec. 31. Music from DJ Kewu.

The Mozart Prague rings in the New Year in true Gatsby style. From 9 p.m. dance the night away with a live musical performance, and countdown to the new year in the stunning surroundings of the hotel's cafe and courtyard. An inclusive entry fee of CZK 1,000 CZK covers a welcome drink, nibbles, and a live DJ.

New Year's Day

The Czech Philharmonic has two concerts on Jan. 1, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. in the Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum. The program features Spanish guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas and mezzo-soprano Clara Mouriz, led by Spanish conductor Juanjo Mena.

The Augustine will serve a special edition of its Sunday brunch on Jan. 1 It will include lentils, which are said to bring prosperity, and traditional Czech "kuba," a barley risotto with forest mushrooms. You can also count on eggs Benedict, grilled salmon, wild boar stew, salad with octopus, Prague ham, roasted pumpkin, and more. Read about it in our story or on the Augustine's website.

There will be no official fireworks show or videomapping in Prague on New Year's Day this year, City Hall announced. Jan. 1 is not only the first day of the year but the anniversary of the independence of the Czech Republic in 1993.

A special holiday edition of Mozart's The Magic Flute, recorded at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2005, will play at Bio Oko on Dec. 30. This version of Julie Taymor's production runs under two hours and is suitable for families.

One of the most popular Danish films of recent years, Another Round has an afternoon screening at Edison Filmhub on Dec. 30 (with Czech and English subtitles). Several teachers explore the positive benefits of drinking on the job while they try to help a graduating class pass their final exams.

The somewhat obscure 1941 Hollywood musical Sun Valley Serenade features Dorothy Dandridge singing the hit song "Chattanooga Choo Choo" as well as band leader Glenn Miller in a dramatic role. Miller also leads his band on screen. See the National Film Archives' original 35 mm copy at Ponrepo on Dec. 30.

The cult movies The Big Lebowski and Licorice Pizza are at kino Aero on Dec, 31 for the cinema's New Year's Eve celebration. "The Big Lebowski" starts at 5:30 p.m. and "Licorice Pizza" at 8:15 p.m.

A preview of the new film Tár, about a troubled classical music conductor, has a preview at Kino Aero on Jan. 1 (in English, with Czech subtitles). The biopic, which stars Cate Blanchett, has already earned multiple awards.

Sports

Several sports facilities including gyms, pools, and courts are open for free as part of Prague's annual Week of Free Sports. More details can be found on the event website and in our original story.
