Major repairs to tram tracks in Prague's Holešovice district will result in traffic detours for nearly two months, Prague 7 transportation authorities have announced.

The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) and Prague Transport Authority said work will occur from Oct. 27 to Dec. 5 on the section of track between Bubenská and Na Zátorách streets. This spans the underpass beneath the railway to Kralupy.

During the project, several tram lines will be diverted from their normal routes through the area. Lines 6, 12, 14, 17, 93 and 94 will all see temporary adjustments. Car traffic will also be rerouted along Vrbenského and Argentinská streets instead of the usual Troja bridge route.

Tram changes

  • Line 6 is diverted in the section Strossmayerovo náměstí-Dělnická via the stops Vltavská and Holešovická tržnice.
  • Line 12 is diverted in the direction from the center from the Nádraží Holešovice stop via the Trojská and Ke Stírce stops to the Kobylisy stop (boarding stop Březiněveská).
  • Line 14 is diverted in the direction from the center from the Dělnická stop via the Nádraží Holešovice, Trojská, Ke Stírce and Kobylisy stops to the Vozovna Kobylisy interchange.
  • Line 17 is shortened in the direction from Libuš to the Výstaviště interchange.
  • Line 93 is diverted in the section Strossmayerovo náměstí-Nádraží Holešovice via the stops Vltavská, Holešovická tržnice and Dělnická.
  • Line 94 is diverted in the section Strossmayerovo náměstí - Dělnická via the stops Vltavská and Holešovická tržnice.

Pedestrians will have access along sidewalks for the most part, though the northern walkway near the Prague Exhibition Grounds will close. Parking will be prohibited on U Papírny Street for the duration of the work.

Once completed, officials say the reconstructed tracks will be in better technical condition with reduced noise and vibrations. The underpass will also have a tighter turning radius allowing for smoother tram travel. Water infrastructure and a railway bridge will also receive upgrades.

The work is part of a larger plan to rehabilitate tracks from Strossmayerovo náměstí to Na Zátorách Street in stages over the coming years. Commuters are advised to check detailed detour maps through the DPP and Transport Authority websites ahead of the October launch of repairs.
