YouTubers, influencers, and other online video creators in the Czech Republic must now register with the Radio and Television Broadcasting Council (RRTV) if they post videos for profit, the council announced Thursday. This requirement is part of the European Audiovisual Media Services Directive, which aims to protect children and regulate the distribution of commercial content.
The new rule, based on the European Audiovisual Directive, aims to set a minimum regulatory framework for all types of audiovisual media services competing for a general public audience within the EU.

The regulation, now part of Czech law, applies to creators on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok who produce content for financial gain. This includes videos that inform, entertain, or educate the public. Creators who operate as business entities in the Czech Republic must complete a free registration form with RRTV.
"The goal of this legislation is to set a basic regulatory framework for all types of audiovisual media services targeting the general public within the EU. Specifically, the directive sets standards to protect children from harmful content, establishes binding rules for commercial communications to safeguard consumer rights, and outlines obligations to protect the rights of individuals and groups," the Broadcasting Council said in a statement.
The new rule could have a broad impact. Media expert Jan Potůček, warned that the broad definition could require many creators, even those who don’t monetize their content, to register. “Anyone with a channel on YouTube, Instagram, or other platforms who regularly posts videos in a certain format may need to register,” Potůček told the Czech Press Agency. “If enforced as written, this could affect thousands or even tens of thousands of people.”
How to register
Does it sound like you are affected? You can register easily via filling out this online form (Czech-only) from the RRTV. You may send it via a data box, if you have one, or via post to the RRTV’s address. Full details here.
Under the new regulation, registered creators may face content checks by RRTV. Potůček also expressed concern that the council may lack the resources to handle the flood of new registrants or effectively review all content. Additionally, viewers can file complaints, prompting RRTV to determine whether the content violates Czech law.
In line with EU standards, the regulation focuses on protecting children from harmful content and ensuring responsible advertising. As creators adjust to these changes, RRTV hopes that registration will help make online content safer while offering a framework for overseeing commercial activities in the digital space.
