A new cafe has opened beneath the Art Noveau dome of the former departures lounge of Prague's main railway station

The station building of Prague’s Hlavní Nádraží, in addition to the adjacent hall above the platform, comprises the largest Art Nouveau monument in the Czech Republic.

That’s why it’s fitting that Josef Fanta, the architect who designed the premises, will once again be honored with a café space bearing his name.

As of May, a new tenant has taken over the premises located beneath the Art Noveau dome of the former departures lounge, occupied by the Café Coffee Day chain since 2015. It reopened last Friday, June 12.

The new tenant, Fanta’s Café, owned by the HS Ristorante company, says it has based its decor on visits to the descendants of the renowned architect to obtain period photographs, which are prominently displayed. It says it wants to offer not only quality coffee but also to introduce the life and work of the architect to the public.

“We reopened Fanta’s café in May 2020. The aim was to restore the spirit of the architect Josef Fanta and to continue the original Art Nouveau beauty of the environment,” the company writes on its Facebook page.The cafe will focus on coffee, fresh-baked desserts lemonade, and ice cream. It is open seven days a week.

Fanta’s design was inspired by the North Station in Paris, which was once a model for many European stations. Construction of the new Art Nouveau building began on June 30, 1901, and was completed in 1909.

This section of the train station is decorated with Art Nouveau motifs and statues reminiscent of Czech cities which you could travel to from Prague at the time of the station’s establishment. The interiors were decorated by sculptors Stanislav Sucharda and Ladislav Šaloun.
