Devised using first hand testimony and performed by students from The English International School of Prague, ‘Empty Hands´ tells the captivating story of the unexpected highs and appalling lows of life at Terezin, through the eyes of a 10 year old girl who is deported to the ghetto in 1941.
EISP students led by Head of Drama, Adam Stewart have collaborated with a Terezin survivor, The Terezin Memorial, The Jewish Museum and students and teachers from The Lauder School, Prague in order to research and devise a unique and thought-provoking production.
‘‘Empty Hands´ began as an idea back in September 2010 and over the last 6 months has become a whole school project that has involved many EISP students. Our goal was to write a play that was an honest account of life at the Terezin ghetto´´, says Adam Stewart.
Primary students were given the opportunity to talk to a Terezin survivor as part of their work on World War 2 and Religious Education students in the senior school visited the Lauder School, Prague in order to celebrate and learn about the Jewish festival of Chanukah with Lauder students.
‘Empty Hands´ will be premiered at The EISP Theatre on Wednesday 18th May followed by performances at The Attic Theatre, Terezin on Tuesday 31st May, Na Pradle Divadlo from Wednesday 1st June – Saturday 4th June from 5.30pm – 6.30pm during the Fringe Festival Praha and at The British School, Warsaw on Thursday 16th June as part of a tour of Poland where students will also have the opportunity to visit Auschwitz/Birkenau and the city of Krakow.
