Preschool education in the Czech Republic aims to help children aged three to six develop and grow basic social and learning skills prior to entering compulsory schooling. While any child is entitled to receive a preschool education (mateřská škola) in Czechia from the age of three at a public school, preference is given to children in the last year before beginning compulsory school attendance.
For this reason, many districts have a shortage of preschool spaces, so it’s best to start the process early for parents who want to send their children to a local school. While the language-barrier can also be a downside for expat families, immersing a child in Czech preschool is a surefire way to develop their language skills!
Prague’s ranges of International and private preschool offerings, however, works to the advantage of foreigners who prefer English-communication with teachers and administrators and greater flexibility. International preschools can have specific focuses on aesthetic activities, movement activities, ecology, or utilize alternative programs like Montessori or Waldorf pedagogy.
You’ll also find Prague preschools that are taught in languages besides English (German or French, for instance) or preschools that are part of a larger private school system offering classes through high school, which is a bonus for those families seeking continuity of education and who aim to build a long-term relationship with a school.
