Last massive round window installed on Prague's Náplavka embankment, shops opening in September

The final round entry window has been placed in the cubicles on the retaining wall on Náplavka along Rašínovo nábřeží. New tenants will move in to the new locations on Prague’s waterfront starting in September. The custom-made hinged round windows are the largest of their type in the world.

The rotating glass windows will be used as new nontraditional entry portals to the renovated cubicles. The design for the new look of the Prague waterfront is architect Petr Janda and the Brainwork studio.

“These are the
largest hinged windows of their kind in the world, custom made for
the capital. They were imported from Thailand and their casting
needed special technology. They will open automatically, allowing
wheelchairs and people with wheelchairs to enter with little
assistance,” Prague City Councilor Jan Chabr (United Force for
Prague), responsible for property, said on the City Hall website.

The production of the windows took three months. “Their transport on the ocean from Thailand and further along the Labe and Vltava via Hamburg to Prague using only ships was extremely demanding. The acrylic lens castings had to be stored in special shipping boxes. The installation was carried out using a crane and unique technology of suction cups,” Jan Nejedlý, coordinator of Náplavka’s management for the city company Trade Centre Praha, said

Altogether 20 cubicles on the Hořejší and Rašínovo embankments have renovated, with repair costs amounting to approximately 87 million CZK for each embankment. Work and preparations took 19 months. Construction and technical support was carried out from February to November 2018 and the construction work itself was followed in December last year. Now the last details remain, and from September new tenants should gradually move to the dungeons.
