One-day surgeries are becoming more commonplace for addressing a wide range of non-emergency medical procedures. These facilities focus on minimally invasive procedures, with quick recovery times and a maximum one-night hospital stay—allowing patients to recuperate in the comfort of their own homes and return to their day-to-day lives faster.

My Clinic aims to follow this global trend by setting the standard for one-day surgeries in Prague.

To keep pace with growing local demand, My Clinic recently opened a One-Day Surgery Center at its Prague 6 campus. Driven by its commitment to providing high-quality, efficient, and patient-centered care, the new center is staffed by a team of top surgeons and physicians specializing in general, abdominal, orthopedics, gynecology, and vascular surgeries.

With minimal pre- and post-op stress, the entire process is less demanding for patients and their families.

“This approach enables us to offer necessary surgical procedures in a more convenient setting for patients, resulting in shorter recovery times and minimal disruption to their daily lives. Our goal is to reduce hospital stays, while delivering the highest possible quality of care,” says Dr. Barbora East, Chief of Surgery at My Clinic’s One-Day Surgery Center.

“We aspire to become a center of excellence in all aspects of our practice, setting a benchmark for others to follow. A year ago, we began this journey by hosting an international conference to establish the highest standards in our field, and we remain fully committed to upholding those standards in everything we do.”

Dr. East, the country's leading hernia surgeon and a world-renowned expert in her field, brings extensive experience in one-day surgeries from both the private sector and NHS Scotland, where this approach has been the standard of care for many years.

“One-day surgeries are becoming more popular, largely due to advancements in medical technology and anesthesia techniques that enable patients to undergo procedures with minimal hospital stays,” says Dr. East. “Surgical techniques have also evolved, with many procedures now being performed minimally invasively, which reduces surgical trauma, lessens pain, and allows for faster recovery.”

Advanced technology and a calming environment

My Clinic’s One-Day Surgery Center has three operating rooms equipped with the latest arthroscopic towers and nanoscope probes. An advanced imaging system allows patients to follow the progress of their surgery through a tablet app. The clinic also uses a modern laparoscopic tower from the renowned manufacturer B. Braun and top-quality instruments from Aesculap.

The focus remains on patient safety, reduced risk of infection, and quicker recovery times. This trend aligns with the needs of modern patients, who seek efficient treatments that allow them to return home and resume their daily activities as soon as possible,” says Dr. East.

Spread over an area of 1,400 square meters, the layout and soothing interior design promote a calming, stress-free atmosphere where patients can rest immediately following their surgery, before being discharged (or spending the night, if necessary). The center has 14 beds in comfortably furnished rooms, with private “hotel-style” bathrooms to ensure that both patients and their companions feel as comfortable as possible.

“My Clinic is not just another newcomer. We aim to be the go-to destination for those seeking the highest possible quality of care. We strive to make My Clinic synonymous with modern, safe, and empathetic healthcare,” says Dr. East. “Our focus is on delivering a patient experience that combines clinical excellence with compassion and understanding.”

One-day surgery process at My Clinic

Following a thorough medical assessment, a course of action will be recommended based on the patient’s individual health status. The patient will then meet with a My Clinic health care coordinator, who will explain the doctor’s proposed plan and what to expect during preoperative preparation.

Once a surgery date is scheduled, patients undergo a pre-op examination, which must be completed within 14 days of the surgery. An internist evaluates the results of this examination, and the report is transferred to the surgeon. The health care coordinator then confirms the surgery date with the patient. If the patient wishes to consult with the anesthesiologist who will be present during their surgery, this can also be arranged.

At this stage, patient education by the My Clinic coordinator is crucial. The patient is informed about potential complications, how to proceed if they arise and what the recovery process and follow-up care should be. One-day surgery procedures usually allow patients to go home on the same day or the following day with a family member or designated person.

Types of surgeries on offer

My Clinic offers a wide range of one-day surgeries. General and abdominal surgeries include hernia repairs and gallbladder and appendix procedures. Gynecological procedures include laparoscopic surgeries focused on diagnosing and treating issues in the area of the internal reproductive organs, pelvis, and abdominal cavity.

One-day orthopedic surgeries focus on arthroscopies of the shoulder and knee, treatment of articular cartilage, and removal of osteosynthetic material. Vascular surgeries—the removal of varicose veins—are also highly in demand.

My Clinic is planning on expanding its one-day surgery to include additional procedures in the future.

Who qualifies?

My Clinic currently only operates on adult patients but intends to expand to include pediatric patients at a future date.

You don’t need to be a regular My Clinic patient to schedule a one-day surgery. Just have all your medical documentation with you when scheduling a consultation with a specialist or surgeon, who will determine the next steps. My Clinic will oversee all necessary pre-op assessments and blood tests.
