Petřín Funicular to Close for Lengthy Repairs

With its sweeping view of the city of Prague, there’s nothing quite like the ride up Petřín Hill via the funicular railway. But if you want to catch a last glimpse of that glorious vista for the season, now is the time. Metro.cz reports that the funicular will shut down for extensive repairs from September 7 to March 18.

Regarding the six-month shut-down, an official for DPP told the publication: “The upcoming lock out is unique in its length and the scope of the repair.” Those repairs are to include significant reconstruction of the funicular track and the Nebozízek stop.

The two-car, 510-m-track funicular, which scales an elevation of 130 m, began operation in 1891. It closed during the First World War but resumed service in 1932 when it was converted to an electrical operation system. Following a 1965 landslide the funicular track again saw massive and lengthy renovations. In 1985 it became part of the city’s integrated transit system.

If regular visits to Petřín Hill are an essential part of your Prague sight-seeing rounds or leisurely weekend strolls, September 6 will be your last chance to access the hill, and its stunning view, on the funicular, although a bus detour will be running for those who are not able to make the trek on foot.
