The first museum of glass has opened in Prague. Portheimka Palace in the Smíchov district will house close to 200 works from Czech glassmakers as well as showcase pieces from international exhibitors.

The best glass artists to emerge from the Czech lands are represented across six rooms in this Baroque villa where Dvořák once played. The palace was constructed in the 1720s by the architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer as a summer residence for his family.

According to the curators of the new space, the second half of the 20th century saw the rich history of Czech glass-making give birth to a new genre of art, so-called studio glass with works comparable to today’s painting and sculpture emerging during that era.

At the center of the movement was former Czechoslovakia with names like Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, Miluše Roubíčková and René Roubíček, Václav Cigler, Vladimír Kopecký, Jiří Harcuba, František Vízner and others achieving worldwide acclaim in the field.

Aside from featuring the works of a diverse range of Czech glassmakers, visitors will find a number of unusual exhibits from glass hearts to glass dogs and the glass dress sculptures of American artist Karen LaMonte.

Additional glass pieces have been provided by Meda Mládek from the Museum Kampa and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague.
