Trams have the right of way at pedestrian crossings in Prague. But that didn't stop young driver David Povýšil from doing the right thing at a crosswalk earlier this week.

On Wednesday at the Lipanská tram stop in Prague's Žižkov district, the 21-year-old driver noticed an elderly blind woman step out onto the crosswalk before walking back to the sidewalk.

"The tram takes precedence at the crosswalk!" Povýšil wrote on Facebook. "But regulations are not always everything."

In video shared to the social network, the driver can be seen exiting his tram and helping the woman across the street, even halting an oncoming tram from the other direction.

"There was nothing to think about," Povýšil later told CNN Prima.

"No one was around. The woman hesitantly entered the crosswalk and returned. Thanks to that, I noticed her." After approaching the woman, Povýšil introduced himself as a tram driver and offered his assistance.

"People are generally not comfortable when someone touches them without warning. But you can also see from the video how the woman reached out to me," he said.

"She was relieved that someone had helped her. She told me straight away that she would like to ride with me." The driver brought her back to his tram, where other passengers helped her find a seat.

Video of Povýšil helping the blind woman across the street was a hit online, but he told CNN that he witnesses kind acts every day from the driver's seat: passengers helping senior citizens with heavy bags, mothers with baby carriages, and so on.

You can catch a ride on Povýšil's tram, the popular number 9, as it runs through central Prague daily.
