According to a new global ranking released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, the best university in the Czech Republic is in Prague — Charles University once again comes out as the top academic institution in the Czech lands.
While no Czech universities were included among the world’s top 50 universities as ranked on the QS list (widely considered the most influential university ranking in the world), a number of the country’s academic institutions made it onto the 2020 list of the 1,000 best universities around the globe.
Rankings are based on several factors including evaluations by international and domestic students, as well as a school’s reputation among employers and in the academic world.
Charles University, the oldest university in the Czech lands, established in the 14th century, came in at #291, with it’s ranking improving slightly over last year’s #317.
The top five worldwide institutions in 2020 were, respectively: MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Oxford, and Caltech.
In an associated ranking of universities from emerging European and Central Asian study destinations, however, Charles University came in third, tying with St. Petersburg State University.
Czech Technical University in Prague (#9), followed by Masaryk University (#11) in Brno, and Brno University of Technology (#25) made the top 25 in a ranking of 300 schools on the QS Eastern European and Central Asian list.
Those same schools also showed up in the overall QS rankings. A total of nine Czech universities ranked among the top 1000 schools in the QS list, including Prague’s University of Chemistry and Technology, which, in its first year on the list, has already been rated the #2 university in the Czech Republic behind Charles University.
All nine Czech universities moved up on the list in 2019, a rare feat given the levels of competition for university rankings.
These Czech schools ranked in the QS list of the world’s top universities for 2019:
291. Charles University, Prague 355. University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague 498. Czech Technical University, Prague 551-560. Masaryk University, Brno 601-650.
