Prague residents and visitors have the unique opportunity to take a step into the future of public transportation at the Výstaviště Praha Exhibition Grounds from this weekend. Through October 5, self-driving autonomous minibuses can be taken for a ride, for free, through the spacious premises of the exhibition grounds in Prague 7.

The presentation of these self-driving minibuses is a collaborative effort between the city of Prague, research company PowerHUB, and British transport company Aurrigo, offering an exciting glimpse into the world of autonomous transportation.

The self-driving vehicles are designed to navigate predefined routes without human intervention. Equipped with an array of sensors, they can detect obstacles, adjust their speed, and even come to a halt if unexpected obstacles or pedestrians cross their path.

The autonomous minibuses feature a 30-horsepower electric motor, enabling them to reach speeds of up to 20 kilometers per hour, with a range of over 120 kilometers on a single charge. Inside, these minibuses offer seating for up to eight passengers, along with dedicated space for wheelchair users, who can easily access the vehicle via a ramp.

During the testing phase at Prague Exhibition Grounds, an onboard operator is present within the minibus. The human supervisor serves as a safety measure, ready to assume control in situations where the autonomous system may require human intervention, ensuring passenger safety and peace of mind.

Passengers are invited to come take a ride on the driverless minibuses for free on most dates through October 5. To do so, simply scan a QR code found at the Výstaviště Praha website to make a reservation to experience this cutting-edge mode of transport.

The minibuses are running daily from 1:00 p.m. through 7:00 p.m. at fifteen minute intervals through October 5, except on September 18, September 23-24, and October 1-2. All rides are completely free of charge.

The autonomous minibus runs on a circular route within the lower section of the Exhibition Grounds, picking up and dropping off passengers by the Brussels Gate entrance to Stromovka park.

The innovative project is supported by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute for Innovation and Technology. EIT Urban Mobility aims to drive positive changes in mobility, enhancing urban living conditions through innovative transportation solutions.

The introduction of autonomous minibuses in Prague holds transformative potential for various sectors beyond just passenger transport, promoting sustainable mobility and overall transport system efficiency.

These autonomous vehicles can help streamline airport operations, provide efficient transportation within large outdoor areas such as amusement parks, optimize the transportation of goods in industrial zones, and address last-mile transportation challenges in busy urban hubs.
