VIDEO: Floating swimming pool on Prague’s Vltava River coming by 2020

The city of Prague made waves last year when it was announced a floating swimming pool on the Vltava would be installed alongside current renovations on the city’s bustling Náplavka riverside cultural space.

While the scope of the project, envisioned by former Prague mayor Adriana Krnacova, was walked back somewhat by the city’s new incoming officials, they confirmed last month that a single pool was indeed still in the plans for Náplavka.

While it won’t be coming with the area’s current renovations, set to be completed in time for the spring 2019 season, it should be ready by 2020.

Last week, the architects behind the project made public animated video that showcased the floating Prague pool in all its glory:

Designed by Petr Janda, Anne Podroužková and Maty Donát, the pool is set to be located under the Vyšehrad Castle, south of the area’s now-restricted Railway Bridge.

Speaking with iDnes.cz, Janda expanded on the scope of the project.

“The intention is to add additional equipment and install floating facilities such as dock terminal, floating baths, floating toilets, and boarding bridges,” he said.

The project is more than just a pool: modelled after a large wooden ship, it will also feature hot tubs and outdoor areas for sitting and sunbathing.

Inside, the ship would offer food & drink facilities with additional seating areas, changing rooms, and public restrooms.

The floating spa is set to undergo construction this year, with plans to finalize the project and open it to the public by the spring 2020 season.

The project was originally intended to revitalize swimming pool culture on in Prague, which once had an extremely popular public baths on the Vltava at Občanská plovárna.

“Spa tourism on the Vltava River had a great tradition in the past, and I want to renew it,” Krnáčová said when she introduced the project in 2017.
