Czech out the lamplighter

From Dec. 1 to 23 you can catch the traditional lamplighter on the Charles Bridge, lighting the historic gas lamps at 4 p.m. with a burning wick on a long rod near the Old Town Bridge Tower. While these gas lamps now operate automatically, Advent is the only time they are manually lit. The Charles Bridge is the world’s only gas-lit bridge, part of Prague’s historic Royal Route.

Explore a new museum in Prague

Explore the new Mozart Interactive Museum in Prague, where cutting-edge technology brings Mozart’s genius to life. This new cultural space at Karmelitská 33, open from Dec. 12, follows the chapters of the composer’s life through virtual reality, 3D models, and animated artifacts. Conduct an opera, take harpsichord lessons at Bertramka, or meet animated characters brought to life by renowned Czech actors.

Light up the night

Saint Lucia's Day, observed on Dec. 13, commemorates Lucia of Syracuse, a Christian martyr associated with light. Celebrated in Scandinavia, Italy, and beyond, it symbolizes hope during winter’s darkness. In Prague, Troja Castle pays tribute with a light show on Dec. 13-14 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. The event features video mapping by Ondřej Rakušan, David Böhm, and Jiří Franta, accompanied by music from Aid Kid. In addition, the underground gallery will showcase other light installations from the GHMP collections. Admission is free.

Try out a new tram

After more than six decades, Prague’s historic Mevro tram—modeled after Italian trams—returns to the city’s streets following its 2021 restoration. Initially retired in the mid-1960s due to technical issues, the tram was revitalized with modern upgrades like LED lighting and a new motor-generator. The tram, influenced by Milan’s vintage trams, will debut on line No. 42 and may expand to line No. 41 for private tours. Read more here.
