Prague is gearing up for its annual Easter markets, which will open in April. The main markets will take place at two historic locations—Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square—and will feature the usual array of spring-fresh foods and fanfare. Smaller markets in and around the center are also slated to open early next month.

Market organizer Taiko has announced that this year's Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square Easter markets will take place on Saturday, April 5, and run for three weeks through Sunday, April 27. The markets will display traditional painted Easter eggs and pomlázky (Easter whips), with stalls selling handcrafted wicker ceramics, textile items, baked Easter lambs, gingerbread, sausage, and other classic fare.

The Old Town Square market will be dominated by an ornately decorated birch tree. At the same time, both locations will host an accompanying program on stage featuring dance and singing ensembles and folklore groups from the Czech Republic and abroad.

Beyond the Old Town and Wenceslas Square markets, Easter markets will also be held at other locations across Prague. The Náměstí Míru market in Prague 2 will open on April 5 and run until April 21. In addition to the usual "Old Czech" cuisine, visitors can buy flowers, seeds, bulbs, seedlings, saplings, and bushes at the market.

Meanwhile, the Anděl pedestrian zone in Prague 5 will host its Easter market starting a week later on Saturday, April 12, continuing until April 21.

The Easter Market at Mariánské náměstí (April 4–27, 2025) will traditional handicrafts, festive foods, and products from social enterprises. A cultural program runs on select days, and a photo exhibition, Traditions in Images, showcases Czech folk costumes.

Public holidays and store closures

Easter in 2025 will span from Friday, April 18 to Monday, April 21, offering a long weekend. Good Friday, April 18, and Easter Monday, April 21, are official public holidays in the Czech Republic, meaning most people will have these days off. Schools will also have a holiday on Maundy Thursday, April 17.

Under Czech law, small and large shops can remain open on Good Friday. However, on Easter Monday, shops that are over 200 square meters in size, including supermarkets and clothing stores, are required to close. Pharmacies, gas stations, shops at airports, railway stations (including Prague’s Hlavní nádraží), and hospitals are exempt from this regulation.

For larger stores with sales areas over 200 square meters (including supermarkets, hypermarkets, and large retailers), these are specific restrictions:

Shop openings/closures in Czechia (larger stores)

  • Open on Good Friday, April 18
  • Open on Easter Sunday, April 20
  • Closed on Easter Monday, April 21 (no sales allowed)
