As the dynamics of Czechia's population shift, questions arise: Is the population growing or shrinking? Recent statistics reveal that more people are leaving than arriving and deaths exceed births. With a current population of approximately 10.88 million, new population data from the Czech Statistical Office sheds light on the factors contributing to this demographic change.

Only 62,700 people immigrated to Czechia in the first half of 2024, a 13,800 decrease from last year. Meanwhile, around 55,500 people died during the same period, 3 percent fewer than the previous year. This means that more people are leaving the country than are coming in, and more people are dying than being born.

Most deaths occurred among men aged 75-79 and women aged 80-84. Additionally, the birth rate has fallen, further exacerbating the demographic decline.

Marriage rates have also declined. In the first half of 2024, 18,600 couples got married, 1,300 fewer than in the same period last year. Most of the brides and grooms were in their 30s. However, nearly half of all marriages ended in divorce, with 10,500 divorces recorded.

These statistics highlight a significant demographic shift in Czechia. The decreasing population, along with declining birth rates and increasing divorce rates, could have potential social and economic implications, such as a shrinking workforce and a rapidly aging population.
