BORSCHT AND BUNS

Ukrainian businesses are making a statement this month with Lviv’s favorite croissant house bringing their unique offerings to Prague’s Palladium. Lviv Croissants’ almost comically large croissant buns, distinctly sturdier than the traditional French pastries, were discovered when an early baking test went awry—but the founder, Andrii Halytskyi, saw the potential for a subversive take on the breakfast item. Fillings such as teriyaki chicken, grilled beef, and pistachio packed into fluffy croissants make the perfect breakfast or lunch pick-me-up.

Serving up hearty, comforting Ukrainian fare that seems plucked from the well-worn cookbooks of babusyas, Soloha Bistro now has a new branch in Prague 2. Step in for a bowl of borscht (with a dollop of sour cream, of course), a plate of pelmeně, or chicken kiev and mash, in a small but homely atmosphere.

SPILLING THE TEA

If you haven’t stumbled into the highly hyped Korean Bistro60 in Vinohrady just yet, now is the perfect time, with autumn bringing exciting new items to their menu. Bistro60 opened in August and was an immediate hit with their bulgogi and yoni sandwiches and Asian baked goods such as fluffy mocha buns. They have now jumped onto the matcha train with homemade matcha milk and mango matcha shakes the latest additions to their fall menu, along with fig french toast with earl grey cream.

Many cafes in Prague offer some iteration of matcha tea or matcha latte, with Asian-inspired bistros such as May in Vinohrady bringing an array of colorful matcha-infused drinks to their menus. With the opening of Atomic Matcha in Karlín and Matcha Crew in Chodov, the green revolution is firmly here, as dedicated clientele are flocking to the matcha-exclusive cafes. Atomic Matcha prides itself on sourcing its premium tea from the Uji region of Japan and is having its moment after opening in September.

NEW FRONTIERS

Modrý Zub (Blue Tooth), already well-established in Anděl and Jindřišská, has brought the aromas of coriander, lemongrass, and chili to Slezská in Vinohrady. As winter’s chill begins to grip the city, a hearty tom yum soup from these proprietors of authentic Thai fare will be the perfect, warm hug.

Another mainstay of the Prague dining circuit, L’Osteria, has found a new home in the Kinský Palace on Old Town Square. The Italian bistro’s reliable pizzas, rich pasta dishes, and fresh antipasti are truly elevated in the flashy new location, tucked in the 18th century building in the heart of Prague.

From the creator of the popular Black Angel’s Bar in Old Town Square, which cultivated for itself an enigmatic, ‘no photography allowed’ aura of exclusivity, comes Zlatý Strom Bar. Tipped to be the next novelty bar for interesting dates and night tourism, the bar, located next to Charles Bridge, is a visual cluster of gold, velvet, and opulence. A large variety of gins, whiskies, rums, vodkas, tequilas and champagne are served.

Dark Kitchen is the latest venture from the company Spojujeme, bringing an international menu to the streets of Vinohrady. For an elevated breakfast experience, try their house-baked viennoiseries, and indulge in eclectic dinners of gin-marinated salmon and ricotta-stuffed ravioli with truffle. A curated wine selection tops off the classy dining experience.

A YEAR OF YOLKS

Karlín’s recently opened Kro has teamed up with beloved Brno brunch spot Eggo for a year-long collaboration. What began as a food truck venture in 2018 became a local favorite in Brno for breakfast enthusiasts, and Eggo is now offering its famous breakfast sandwiches, scrambled eggs, tempeh, and more on Sokolovská Street for what is set to be a fruitful partnership.
