Invalidovna in Karlín will commemorate the anniversary of the 1984 film Amadeus by director Miloš Forman, which was shown two years later in Czechoslovakia.

The screening of the new documentaryForman vs. Forman on Sunday, August 25, at 9 pm depicts the life of a famous director. It will be screened in the courtyard of the Baroque building where one of the key scenes of the film was shot.

Forman’s crew chose Invalidovna for several indoor and outdoor scenes. Probably the best-known is the opening scene when Salieri is brought by servants through the snowy courtyard of Invalidovna, which in the film was transformed into a sanatorium for the mentally ill.

Shots from the interior of the sanatorium at the beginning and the end of the film were shot in the ground floor corridor of the eastern wing of Invalidovna, which visitors can now see during guided tours.

Salieri’s confession to a priest that is intertwined throughout the film was filmed in one of the accommodation units designed by architect Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer.

Invalidovna has long been a neglected architectural gem in Prague. It was founded in 1728 by Emperor Charles VI, who three years later took part in the laying of the foundation stone of the building, in which about 4,000 invalids were to take refuge. The inspiration is Les Invalides in Paris.

Under the administration of the National Heritage Institute, Invalidovna has long been a favorite filming location (scenes Hellboy and The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles were also shot here). Filming will continue here through autumn and winter 2020 on Netflix’s upcoming Freud miniseries.
