Today see the Prague debut of the first ever Sound of Silent Movies festival, which matches up eight musicians and bands from the Czech Republic and abroad in a competitionto find the best-improvised soundtracks to a line-up of classic silent films.

The slapstick antics of Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin will get a new musical accompaniment across thirteen festival evenings when talented bands, soloists, and DJs from an array of genres will perform on-the-spot soundtracks for cult films such as Train Chase, Modern Times, Dictator, and Bicycle Thief.

Screenings will take place on the Molo Pražačka terrace.

“I appreciate this idea to remind viewers of the beginnings of the film industry, its history, and development. All of this, accompanied by live music on the outdoor terraceinthe Pražačka will not be an ordinary summer cinema [but] a cinema that will introduce movies to people in a broader context,” says Prague 3 mayor Alexander Bella of the project.

Among the artists slated to perform is Lenka Morávková whose Bohemian Cristal Instrument is a one-of-a-kind musical sculpture made from Czech glass (Train Chase, 1916). For the opening night, guests will be treated to the acid jazz and triphop grooves of Atomic Gigolo who will jam to screenings of Ferda Mravenec (1943) and King Kong (1933).
