Prague’s top 10 weekend events: St. Martin’s Day, Christmas cinema, and flea markets

This weekend offers a smorgasbord of cultural delights, from young wine tastings to a lineup of theatrical and comedy performances.

ST. MARTIN’S FEASTING

Sink your teeth into golden, crispy goose skin paired with dumplings and wine at one of many establishments putting on a feast across the weekend in lieu of St. Martin’s Day on Nov. 11. All nine Lokál restaurants in Prague will be serving up fresh, unfrozen goose sourced from Farma Tůmovi in ​​Nestanice from Saturday to Monday. You can also go to Café Savoy, Výčep, and many other spots around the city for your St. Martin’s feast.

Sample the year’s first young and St. Martin’s wines at the open market by Hradčanská’s railway crossing on Nov. 8 from midday ‘til late. Moravian winemakers will have their latest production on offer for the Tasting of Young Wines 2024 event.

The onset of freezing weather won’t put a stop to picnicking; the Winter Appetite Picnic hosted in the beautiful premises of the National Agricultural Museum is bringing a host of sweet and savory treats from popular vendors to you on Nov. 9. Take home tasty preserves and pastries and explore the museum exhibits for free.

ELEVATED CINEMA

Let the brutalist behemoths of post-war Czechoslovak architecture loom before you on the silver screen this weekend as the highly anticipated Architektura ČSSR 58-89 documentary film premieres in cinemas across the city. See the full program here.

Making its seasonal debut, the elaborately decorated Christmas-themed Sunset Cinema is back this weekend, complete with a secret entrance, Christmas drinks from the food bar, letters to Santa, elves, and more in Holešovice. You can catch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Home Alone, and more cozy classics this weekend.

CRAFTED CURIOSITIES

On Nov. 10, a range of talented vendors and local artists will be selling their designer and vintage products, including clothes, jewelry, books, candles, and more, at Manifesto Market on Anděl. The Crafty Market: Handcrafted Treasures will run from noon to 6 p.m.

An Autumn Flea Market in front of the Moje Místo bistro will also take place on Nov. 10, replete with stylish clothes for children and adults. Enjoy an autumnal brunch from the bistro before delving into the unique pieces, on display from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A magical exhibition of artistic dolls and collectable teddy bears will go on show in the Lucerna Palace from Nov. 8 to Nov. 10, presenting artifacts from Europe, Japan, the U.S., Africa, New Zealand, and further reaches of the globe. Presentations from the National Institute of American Doll Artists will run across the weekend, along with a shopping area with Christmas gifts and artful trinkets for this year’s Doll Prague.

ARTS AND LAUGHS

November is stacked with major comedy events, and this weekend you can indulge in a night of top-tier British and Irish humor as The Comedy Store heads to Rock Café on Nov. 8. International comedy stars Lauren Pattison, Ian Coppinger, and Daisy Earl will hit the stage with observational humor and amusing takes on contemporary life for one night only.

The Prague Crossroads festival, first launched in 2016, is making its annual comeback at Prague’s National Theatre this month and has a curated line-up of theatrical shows from leading ensembles. Watch Medea’s Children, a harrowing play riffing on the classical Greek tragedy Medea, on Nov. 9 and Nov. 10, exploring themes of family history and the role of children in theater.

The National Gallery’s École de Paris exhibit opens today and runs until March 2 2025, celebrating Czech artists who were part of Paris’ interwar art scene. The exhibit showcases Paris’ avant-garde with a distinct Czech lens, capturing the cultural exchanges that defined the era and revealing how Czech artists contributed to one of art history’s most influential periods. 

A band that’s recently broken onto the scene with their smashing hit Nothing Matters is bringing their indie outfit to SaSaZu on Nov. 10. The British five-piece The Last Dinner Party offers a delightful fusion of rock’n’roll and folk which is captivating old school rockers and the younger generation alike.
